I have two sewing machines now! Here’s my new Singer Fashion Mate 7256 !! It’s my first modern sewing machine and will be my main machine for as many years of sewing as I can squeeze out of it. As the name suggest this machine is great for Dressmaking or Fashion Sewing. Which is just what I needed. My vintage Singer Treadle 66 was a great starter machine at $25 (and ideal for Quilting given the flat bed is flush to the table) but was cumbersome for most of my other projects which are mainly clothing and accessories.
I’d been looking for a machine for awhile and just couldn’t commit to one. So instead my darling BF did it for me! 🙂 I got this for Christmas last year. He picked it out all by himself and surprised me. The Best! (Rygo is getting a run for his money!) And it turned out to be just the perfect machine for me to graduate to. It has everything and more a budding home sewer needs from fashion sewing to quilting to home/dec sewing. And it’s well under $200!
Best of all, I get to sew all my future projects on a machine that was carefully selected by my darling BF! Who knew nothing about sewing or machines lol! He spent a lot of time researching though, looking for the best value (which I like!) that suited my needs, and last but not least “one that had lots of decorative stitches”! He personally likes colorful decorative stitches like embroidery, monograms, embellishment stitches etc. Too cute! It’s just perfect! ❤ ❤ ❤
Compact Yet Packed with Features
I went from doing everything manually on my old machine to a machine with 70 stitches that’s packed with features where everything is automatic! Little things like removable bed, Back Stitch, and Zig Zag Stitch are all luxuries for me so I love that. But this machine also has fully automated button hole maker, automatic threader, and an automatic tension setter! All this in a compact frame so it’s great for small apartments.
Learn and Grow
Start with whatever you’d like to learn. Your first A-line skirt, a pair of paints or shorts, a dress, a top, a tote bag! Or if you’d like to try your first quilt or make some curtains to spruce up your apartment. So it’s great for an adult beginner sewer or hobbyist sewer.
Quiet and Speedy
Compared to my old sewing machine it’s whisper quiet and really fast! My vintage Singer Treadle 66 can be really loud (and louder at full speed) and it’s fastest speed, compared to modern sewing machines, is slow!
Built To Last
This sewing machine features an all metal frame underneath its plastic compact shell. So it’s a great full-sized machine that fits in small spaces that will also ensure many years of happy sewing to come. It comes with a 25 Year Limited Warranty too.
Great Value at Under $200
It costs $160! Well under $200.

Features & Benefits:
Built-In Stretch Stitches
Specially designed stitches that add strength and flexibility to seams. These are especially useful when sewing on knitwear and super-stretch fabrics.
Adjustable Stitch Length and Width
Optimal settings for length and width are automatically selected when choosing a stitch. They can be overridden to personalize length and width choice.
Center Zigzag Taper
When tapering with the zigzag stitch, the stitch tapers to the center, not the left or right. This provides a more attractive look when tapering into or out of a point.
Twin Needle Capability
When using a twin needle (optional), selected stitches can be adjusted for twin needle sewing by reducing the stitch width. Twin needle stitching creates two parallel rows, adding a decorative touch.
13 Needle Positions
Needle position can be changed for individual projects, such as inserting zippers or cording and topstitching.
6mm Stitch Width
Most stitches can be set for a maximum width of 6mm. When sewing decorative stitches or satin stitches, the wide stitches are bolder and more pronounced.
Auto Tie-Off Function for Straight Stitch
Tie-off straight stitches with just a push of a button. Reinforcing the beginning and end of the seam prevents unraveling.
Tacking Stitch with Auto Tie-Off Function for Decorative Stitches
Tie-off decorative stitches, at the beginning and end of the sequence, with just a push of a button.
Six-Second Threading
Thread the machine in six seconds. Just follow the arrows on the machine, and you are threaded in a snap.
Sewing Speed
With a maximum sewing speed of 750 stitches-per-minute, projects can be sewn quickly.
Automatic Presser Foot Pressure
The amount of pressure exerted on the fabric by the presser foot against the feed dogs is automatic. Sew from the lightest weight tricots to the heaviest denim, without making presser foot adjustments.
Extra-High Presser Foot Lifter
There are two heights to the presser foot lifter. The second height offers more clearance, which is needed when placing multiple layers of bulky fabric under the presser foot.
Heavy Duty Metal Frame
The internal skeleton of the sewing machine. This rigid support holds all the mechanisms in perfect alignment for perfect, skip-free sewing.
Optimum Power Control
This is a SINGER name for a control system that senses when additional power is required to maintain speed through thick or changing fabric conditions. This feature is most useful when sewing through multiple (six-eight) fabric layers.
On-Board Storage
Storage of accessories in the Removable Extension Table means accessories are always handy.
StayBright LED Lifetime White Lamp The lamp illuminates the sewing surface for optimal viewing. The long-lasting bulb (100,000 hours) stays cool, regardless how long the machine is operated.
Warranty
The SINGER Fashion Mate 7256 has a 25-year limited warranty including 25 years parts, 5 year electronic and 1 year labor.

I was wondering if you have tried sewing multiple layers of think (upholstery) fabric with this machine? I’d like to be able to work on canvas and denim. Thanks so much!
Alice
Hello! Recently I was working on a collar pattern and had to sew through 6+ layers of medium weight (cotton/rayon blend) fabric. It was thick enough that the sewing foot barely lifted high enough for me to pass the fabric through. But once I managed to squeeze it in and lock the foot back down, it sewed fine.
I have also sewed denim on it as seen here in my previous post. But I’m not sure it will handle several layers…
There is a second height for the presser foot that allows it to lift higher but I have not tried it yet. So I’m not quite sure.
It depends on how thick the fabric is but I don’t think it can handle multiple layers of canvas, denim, or upholstery weight though. 🙁 Simply because the presser foot won’t raise high enough. My guess is it can handle at least 2-4 layers heavy weight materials.

How is the automatic buttonholer? Can you share some examples. And is the machine still with you. I know it’s been a few years since you wrote this posting.

Hi Alice,
Thank you for your detailed review of the Singer 7256. I am wondering if you have used a binding foot attachment. I will appreciate it if you can share what kind you are using.
Alice
Hello Analiza,
I have never tried a binding foot yet. Are you looking to sew face masks? I know these days everyone is sewing face masks and elastic is in short supply so using bias tape is a good alternative. I haven’t had a project yet where I am using binding that needs precision! I usually freehand sew short length piping for craft projects like buntings! But there are many tutorials out there including video ones. I will be practicing soon!
If you need to create bias tape in large quantities, I know many people make use of a bias tape maker. Examples here, on Amazon. They come in different sizes for different widths bias tape. I always choose Clover brand products where possible!
Also, here is an adventurous quilter who shared her technique for sewing yards and yards of bias tape with a standard presser foot! Amazing! https://www.instagram.com/p/B_QEgduHswj/
