Here is some design inspiration for beginner quilters that are easy yet eye-catching. Play with colorwork and prints to create a lovely design that doesn’t require advanced difficulty. Using only alternating blocks of color to form simple yet attractive designs like Checkerboard, Gingham, and Checker Motifs. These designs use only square patches to create the motif.
Even simple quilt planning for a basic design like a Checkerboard can be tough! Sometimes you want just the right blocks in just the right spots. Subtle tweaks and a great eye for design can go a long way. But that is the fun part, if you can manage enjoying the process! Coming up with just the right design/layout is really satisfying and, of course, creates something you can use and enjoy!
Employing more complicated quilt blocks like a 4-patch, 6-patch, or 9-patch block (that still use square-only construction) can open up a whole new world of designs. But for now these keep it extremely simple with each quilt block consisting of only a single square of fabric. A few examples below employ 9-patch quilt blocks but this can be translated down to single square patches if using small fabric cuts like 5″ fabric blocks.
