Mongolian Supreme Hat

I made the Kublai Khan Splendor Hat by Elisabeth Poire. And it ROCKS!!! HEART IT! Finally a decent hat pattern. I tried about 6 different hat patterns (duds) to get to this one. I made a few changes to the original pattern and call my version the “Mongolian Supreme Hat”. Ha! Mainly I used a 2×2 Rib Stitch and kept the ribs all the way until the end. It is knitted holding 5 strands of yarn together in Burgundy, Chocolate, Plum, Navy, and Dark Rose colors listed below. Jewel tones! It kind of looks like a cross between a Mongolian hat and a hat you’d see some librarian in the 70’s wearing with a long quilted dusty rose coat. Puffy.

Notes:
The pattern was easy as pie and the instructions were clear and easy to follow. My version has less rows [46] than the original pattern [52]. I only needed to roll the brim up TWICE instead of 3 times as noted in the original pattern.

This is a circular knit or “knit in the round” piece that uses Circular Knitting Needles. Just remember to use stitch markers to mark the 4 sections. I used Double Pointed Needle because that’s all I had in that size.

Claire Creates has a nice tutorial on her blog on how to do a decrease on a 2×2 Rib Stitch. Great detailed photos of perfect decreases! Thanks Claire!

For Rows 37-44 I did the “knit the knits and purl the purls” version because I wanted to keep the ribs. If you do not, just Knit all the way around as the directions say.

I didn’t block at all. It was perfect as is. So I just put it on and danced around!

It looks like a Bundt Cake when it’s upside down!

UPDATE: Wear… After heating up from all day wear the hat tends to loosen. To the point where if I turn my head too fast the hat spins! Hehe. So next time I may lose a few stitches to tighten up the fit.
