Headband in English Rib

I found this wonderful pattern on Mirella Moments and fell in love with the stitch. This pattern uses an English Rib Stitch which can be knitted in various ways and is sometimes called Fisherman’s Rib Stitch or Brioche Stitch… Depending on how it’s knitted. This pattern is a true English Rib Stitch and uses Yarn Overs and K2Togs to accomplish.

I wanted a chunkier oversized version, so I modified it to suit my needs. I loved it so much I made a few headbands in different sizes (Oversized Adult, Slim Adult, and Baby) and also a scarf and hat for Christmas Presents!

Needle: US Size 7 [4.50mm] Straight or Circular Needles

Skill Level: Beginner

Finished Measurements: 5″ Wide x 20″ Long

Pattern:
Pattern requires a multiple of 3 sts, 30 sts x 80 rows

Cast On:
Cast on 30 sts over 2 needles held together for a looser cast on. Note: I use my own custom Cast-On but the original pattern uses Long-Tail Cast-On.

Row 1: *YO, Slip 1 Stitch Purlwise, K2TOG*, repeat from * to * until the end of the row.
Row 2: Repeat Row 1. Note: In this row (and all subsequent rows), you will be knitting the yarn over and the slipped stitch together.
Rows 3-80: Repeat Row 2 until 80 rows or desired length.

Bind Off:
Bind off loosely. The idea here is to purl the purl stitches and yarn overs and to knit the knit stitches.

Purl the first stitch, purl the yarn over (now you have two stitches on your right needle), insert the left needle into the first stitch on the right needle and bring it over the second one. Knit 1, insert the left needle into the first stitch on the right needle and bring it over the second one. Repeat these steps until the end of the row.

Leave a tail (30-40cm/12-16″) to sew the edges together.

Finish and Seaming:
Fold the piece in half length-wise to create a long skinny rectangle. Twist one end, then fold in half bringing the cast-on and bind-off edges together. Alternate folds so that they are sandwiched between each other. Sew through all four edges to seam together, knot, and cut excess tail. Turn inside out. Done! Mirella Moments has a great tutorial on how to finish the seaming here.

Alternate Sizes:
Slimmer Headband – US Size 6 [4.00mm] Needles, 24 sts x 80 rows, Finished Size 5″x18″
Baby Headband – US Size 6 [4.00mm] Needles, 15 sts x 55 rows, Finished Size 4″x14″

Notes:
Ribbing is worked without the edge stitches and it did give a wonderful clean finished looking selvedge.

This is a great project for those partial balls of yarn that may be lying around!

I loved the Deborah Norville Soft Worsted Yarn. The weight, texture, and durability were just perfect for this project. And for a nice price too!
